Learning Geographic Information System (GIS) is something I have been wanting to do for some time since my university days when I have realised that GIS is a valuable skill to have on a resume. However, due to fear of undertaking a new software that is seemingly complicated, I have not taken the first until I come across QGIS 3 for Absolute Beginners by Klas Karlsson on Youtube. The video is concise enough for me to want to step out of my comfort zone to get an introduction to Quantum GIS (QGIS). The picture above is a product of me following the video. It definitely needs to look better, but I think it is good enough for a first impression in under 1 hour. I look to spending more time on the app or any GIS for sure.
Things I Like
1. A powerful software. QGIS has many functions and customisable options. Although I have only created a simple map within an hour, I see the potential of how it can be transformative to anyone who can use the software. Maps can be created with points, lines, and polygons. It can read many types of files. Layers to work on. Having worked on Tableau's Map function, what this software can do is mind-blowing to me, but much knowledge on cartography and geography will likely be needed to create something good. An hour with QGIS is definitely not enough to give a complete review, but I see the potential of the software.
First Impression: A free GIS software that will help users learn about GIS.
