Book Review: Innovative Tableau by Ryan Sleeper

I read the 2020 version.

Summary

As a sequel to Practical Tableau, Innovative Tableau takes readers to the next level in Tableau. Going beyond the basics, the book shows readers how to navigate and work on Tableau through its innate functions like Parameters and Calculated Fields. With the focus of the book being mainly on creating data visualisations for interactive dashboards, this book, readers who are using Tableau to analyse data will find the book useful. I have myself used one of the formulas for a scatter plot at work, so the book is not so much different from its prequel by providing "Practical Tableau" tips.

Things I like

1. Innovative yet practical. Unlike the tutorials or data vizzes, you see online done using Tableau that mostly is about capturing viewers' attention, the book teaches more than just flourishing. It explains to readers how to use Tableau to pick apart data like basic Excel and in Tableau's own way. The things taught in the book are replicable and repeatable.

2. It goes beyond "level one". As mentioned in the previous reviews on Sleeper's other 2 books, there are some overlaps, but this book is refreshingly packed with 100 new tips and techniques. It is indeed a worthy sequel to the previous book.

Final Verdict: The book contains techniques that are creative yet practical. It showcases the other side of Tableau that is often missed out on by others.
