Book Review: Communicating with Data by Carl Allchin

I have read the 2021 version.

Summary

A book that will introduce readers to the ways of presenting data without compromising the intended messages. It is a book suitable for beginners in data visualisation or anyone working with data and charts at work regardless of whether the products are in the form of dashboards or presentation slides. The book brings readers through the process from the start to the end, from how to read and manipulate data to how to design and colour the data visualisation. A tool-agnostic book, it also offers suggestions on additional reads that readers can pick up on the topic of data visualisation.

Things I like

1. Data to viz process. By taking readers from the start to the end of creating a piece of work to communicate data, the book is possibly a good stepping stone for anyone looking to get into or understand data communication. The book goes into detail on how to read and optimise a table to prepare it for visualisation. It also goes into how to scope a project with stakeholders, a very real scenario met at work.

2. Chart by chart. The book also offers 2 chapters worth of writings on commonly used charts. It explains the good and the bad of each chart, giving readers insights on what to pick when they encounter the different types of data.

Final Verdict: A book that serves to initiate readers' journey to creating works to convey messages behind data effectively almost in a step-by-step manner.
