The above image is taken from the Singapore government webpage on COVID-19 case numbers. It is a stacked bar chart of Singapore COVID-19 hospitalised patients by age group.
Reading Visualizing Health and Healthcare Data, I have come across an argument on how Multiple Stacked Bar Charts are not recommended because they:
As such, the book recommends using Small Multiple Bar Charts. This is due to them being:
Hence, I have reimagined the initial chart on Singapore COVID-19 hospitalised by age group below:
If we are to put the time axis in horizontally, it can mean a limited number of columns to be squeezed onto a screen, and side-scrolling may not be the way people are used to scrolling. By putting the time axis vertically, it also allows easier comparison of the totals by day. Therefore, I have tried another way with the time axis placed vertically:
Although values can be compared across columns and rows, reference lines can be harder. As noted, below the reference lines of the average cuts differently, one for the age group and the other for the day respectively.
All in all, being able to apply something from a book means a fruitful learning experience.
