Book Review: No Humble Pie by Ian Spence

I have read the version here.

Summary

An academic paper on the origins of the pie chart.  First, it goes into an explanation of the first few pie charts by William Playfair, the inventor of the pie chart.  Next, this paper traces the possible story behind the invention of the pie chart and what possibly inspired it. Then it moves into illustrating the adoption of the pie chart. Finally, it ends with a survey of the usage of the pie charts. Written in 2005, the survey may not be the most updated, but the rest of the essay is still insightful.

Things I Like

1. The explanation of Playfair's pie chart. The author first expounds on the first pie chart from Playfair's Statistical Breviary, it also discusses how the pie chart in the Statistical Account of the United States of America may be a counter to the argument against the pie chart.

2. Review of criticisms and criticisms on the pie chart. Collecting the difference comments from different writers on pie charts, this section of the paper presents a balanced view on the pie chart without going demonising the pie chart.

Final Verdict: If you fancy yourself an expert in pie chart, try reading this.
