In 2022, I have shared on this blog how to create a polar area diagram using map layers and pie charts on Tableau with some manipulation of the data table. Continuing the theme of the month, the pie chart, I am going to share how I have created Nightingale's rose diagram using shapes and floating tiles. This method is similar to the one I have used to create nested circles (onion chart) also seen on this blog.
There are other ways to create a polar area diagram on Tableau using the 2 other ways below:
- Replacing an existing template from Excel (Ken Flerlage)
- Creating polygons with Calculated Fields (Toan Hoang)
1. Create a Pie Chart with all Equal Sides in PowerPoint
- Create a pie chart on PowerPoint: Insert > Chart > Pie > OK
- Make the wedges the same size by updating the value of each wedge to 1
- If the table does not pop up in the first instance: Right-click the chart > Edit Data
- Remove the chart title and legend: Click on the pie chart > "+" symbol > Uncheck "Chart Title" and "Legend"
- Remove the colour of the pie chart: Right-click on the chart > Fill > No Fill
- Remove the outline of the pie chart: Right-click on the chart > Outline > No Outline
- Colour 1 wedge: Click on a specific wedge > Fill > Any colour
- Save the coloured wedge as an image file: Right-click on the chart > Save as a picture
- Repeat for each wedge
2. Create the Viz on Tableau
- Create a circular chart with the shapes
- Place a "0" in Rows: Double-click anywhere in Rows > hit 0 > hit Enter
- Change the marks to Shape: Dropdown list > Shape
- Drag the pill that you want the chart to split each wedge into to Colour
- Drag the same pill to Shape
- Drag the pill for the values to Size
- Create a transparent pie chart for labelling
- Place another "0" in Rows
- Make the 2 "0" pills a dual axis: Right-click on one of the "0" pills > Dual Axis
- Change the marks Pie: Dropdown list > Pie
- Drag the pill that is in the Colour mark to Detail
- Drag the pill for the values to Size and change it to MAX: Right-click on the value pill > Measure > Maximum
- Change colour to transparent: Colour > Set Opacity to 0%
- Drag the text you want to show to Label
- Adjust the size to your liking by clicking on Size and dragging along the slider
- Clean up the borders and gridlines
- Right-click anywhere on the chart > Format > Borders > Set all to none
- Do the same for gridlines
3. Publish Your Polar Area Diagram (Sunburst / Rose / Coxcomb Chart)!
