Book Review: Fundamentals of HR Analytics by by Fermin Diez, Mark Bussin and Venessa Lee

I read the 2019 version.

Summary

This book review has been a long time coming. Although I have read this book before when I am asked to work on an HR analytics project at work, I have read this book another time before embarking on this review. Fundamentals of HR Analytics is not a data visualisation book, as much as I wish to easily find one on the library's shelves. Looking into HR analytics, the authors have not only provided explanations on various HR concepts, but they have also highlighted how analytics can be applied to each of them. Despite the serious discussion of techniques for analysing HR data, the book does not offer technical guidance on how to perform them. As such, expectations need to be set right before delving into this book.

Things I Like

1. Processes for analysing data for HR. A book more suitable for HR managers rather than HR analysts gives insights into many HR analytics methods through explanations of how each of them works. This allows readers to be able to choose which techniques they can explore accordingly based on their problems. Thus, it is accessible even for non-numerically inclined HR personnel so they can understand the analytics workflow.

2. Flow charts to illustrate. With that said, the text is often accompanied by charts and illustrative examples of analyses. They are helpful as they can act as a checklist for HR managers working on HR analytics projects.

3. Case studies.  The book includes case studies on HR analytics projects, albeit not in-depth on the implementation.

Final Verdict: Although the book does discuss HR analytics at length, it is not a step-by-step tutorial on how to analyse data for different HR projects.
