Book Review: The Infographic Resume by Hannah Morgan

I read the 2014 version.

Summary

The resume is one of, if not, the most common thing associated with HR. An infographic resume is one way to have your resume stand out in the eyes of the viewers. This is a "how to" book on designing an infographic resume to put yourself in more eyes of recruiters and hiring managers. The book starts off by telling why readers should get an infographic resume instead of a regular one. It then goes into the basic of writing a resume. Readers are then brought through topics on how to design an infographic resume and the principles of creating a good infographic. It continues into how to create a LinkedIn profile. The Infographic Resume also provides resources for readers between the pages.

Things I Like

1. Inspirational. Although the book's design ideas are from 2014, which may be quite different from what is considered good design today, it offers ideas on how to create resumes that visually stand out from the usual plain resumes read line by line and point by point. Readers should take them as inspiration instead of carrying the ideas over completely without thoughts.

2. A "how-to" book for creating infographics. The book is not exactly a step-by-step guide, but it offers elements that readers need to know when it comes to creating an infographic resume.

Final Verdict: It should be noted that with the advent of applicant tracking systems (ATS), resumes that are in the infographic format may not be easily captured by automated systems. As such, this book is best read as one on infographics and resumes, but not infographic resumes unless your infographics can be read by an ATS.
